Welcome Week Activities 2006

Monday, August 21
Late Night Tour of the Monuments
10:00 p.m.—12 midnight, Leave from Kay Chapel
Come with the United Methodist Student Association (UMSA) for a nighttime tour of the monuments followed by some ice cream or other refreshments out on the town.

Tuesday, August 22
Movie with the Methodists

10:00 p.m.—12:00 am, SIS Lounge, SIS Building, 1st Floor
Join the UMSA in watching "Inside Man" starring Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, and Jodie Foster. Free snacks and refreshments will be provided. Hang around afterwards to talk about the movie or just meet new people.

Wednesday, August 23
Interfaith Event: Cupcakes on the Quad

Late nite (10:15 p.m.), Quad in front of Kay
Join the interfaith community as we provide cupcakes as a snack in honor of our own "flaming cupcake" the Kay Spiritual Life Center.

Thursday, August 24
Communion & Healing Service
11:00 p.m., Kay Chapel
Every Thursday night our community offers a contemplative service of communion, reflection, and intercessory prayer. During the school year it’s a great break during the middle of the week.

Friday, August 25
S’mores with s’Methodists
10:00 p.m. – midnight, Kay Quad
Cap off your first week at AU by joining us for some s’mores in front of the Kay Chapel.

Sunday, August 27
Sunday Worship
7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Kay Chapel
Join us for our informal-traditional Sunday night worship in the Kay Chapel, held every Sunday at 7 p.m. and get to meet all the members of the community. Stay around afterwards for fellowship and snacks.

Tuesday, August 29
Kay Interfaith Council Beach Party
4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Quad in front of Kay
Come to the quad in front of Kay for the Interfaith Beach Party and join us for volleyball, lounging in the pool, snacks, music, and fishing for prizes.

And if that’s not enough, we’ve got a bunch of things going on during the month of September, too…

Baseball Outing to RFK Stadium
Saturday, September 2
5:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. Depart from Kay Chapel
We’ll be traveling by bus to RFK Stadium to see the Washington Nationals play the Arizona Diamondbacks. Cost: $10.00 (includes ticket and transportation). Please RSVP to (202) 885-3304 by August 29, 2006 to reserve a ticket.

Hike in the Rock Creek Park
Saturday, September 9
12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Depart from Kay Chapel
Join the UMSA for a hike at the beautiful Rock Creek Park. We’ll be traveling there via AUTO van. Bring a picnic lunch, a camera, and your hiking shoes.

Feed the Quad
Tuesday, September 12, 2006,
11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Our annual free community cookout on the quad. At our previous events we have given away over 400 burgers, veggie burgers, and hot dogs to anyone who came on by. Come by to help out or for a free lunch.

Community Retreat in Shenandoah
Friday, Sept. 15 to Saturday, Sept. 16
Our annual fall retreat in Virginia, in the mountains of the Shenandoah, at the cabin of the University Chaplain. Get away from campus for a bit, enjoy the beautiful countryside, and take some time to reflect with other members of the community.
